Dr. Suess a little late...again

Wow, it seems like every year during March I get bogged down. Of course last year I was 9 months pregnant by this point and very ready for my 3rd little boy to arrive.

Anyway, last year our cooking activity for Read Across America was based on the book Green Eggs and Ham.  (You can check out that post by clicking here. )  This year, we decided to go with making the hat from The Cat in the Hat.  This gave use the opportunity to work on a lot of different skills such as cutting with a knife (knife safety skills), patterns, color identification and not to mention having a healthy snack to eat. It also worked on some sensory issues with touching fruit.







So here is what we did. We used strawberries, bananas, and Nilla wafers    We pre-washed and cut the strawberries.  The kiddos had to open the banana and slice it.











We then used some skinny wooden dowels I had (they are more like long tooth picks without the points) and layered strawberries and banana   Last we tried to put them on top of a Nilla Wafer   The last part did not work out so well, but it all still tasted great!  After we finished, the kids took the banana and strawberries and offered them to different people.  This gave us some practice with social skills and communication.
